Sue Hamer
Painter
My work is primarily in oil, on small-scale paintings on board, paper, linen, and canvas. I enjoy the intimacy of working on a smaller scale, the intense focus it demands, and the quiet concentrated energy that can emerge.
My practice explores the cinematic and photographic qualities of painting. I use both found images and my own photographs as source material; manipulating them through reframing, cropping, and close-ups—techniques drawn from photography and film. These fragmented compositions are then translated into paint, using a limited colour palette focused on subtle tonal values to compress and flatten space. Through this process, I aim to evoke a sense of otherness and disquiet, within the work.
