Image: Susan Ramsay-Smith’s talk For our September event, we ran a new and improved event where 4 artist members delivered a short 10-minute talk about their practice.
This Pecha Kucha-style event, previously run as 5x5, gives us the opportunity to get to know more about the work and inspirations of our members. As usual, an eclectic mix of artists was showcased, demonstrating the diversity of our artists' network including painters, ceramicists and sculptors:
The artists who took part were as follows:
Susan Ramsay-Smith
Susan Ramsay-Smith’s ceramic practice is underpinned by an ecological approach, sourcing and processing Weald clay. After completing her Craft MA in 2021, when Susan focussed on investigating and testing different materials, she relocated to Eastbourne which offers a new seascape.
Susan’s interest for experimenting with naturally occurring clay deposits was stimulated by a studio visit to Danish potter Anne Mette Hjortshøj, on the island of Bornholm. Reflecting on this experience, Susan allows the alchemy and interplay between material and process to inform the outcome of her work, creating sculptures and vessels which signify the relationship between the material and landscape.

David Rice
David trained as a graphic designer and was an art director on various entertainment and lifestyle magazines. He began painting in 2018. When the Covid pandemic arrived, the free time helped him reassess his life. Taking long walks through the South Downs landscape heavily inspired his painting.
His work is a response to the meditative nature of walking and the benefits it brings, both physically and mentally. Often not depicting a specific place, instead trying to capture the essence of the landscape and the feeling of being outside in nature.

Victoria Snazell
Victoria Snazell paints from her studio in Brighton. She studied Fine Art at Bath in the early ‘90s, where she was awarded the Gane Travel Scholarship and exhibited at the Royal Society of Sculptors. Shifting from a sculptural to painterly bias, her playful style investigates the physicality of the medium and our complicated relationship to things in the world.
In 2022, she was selected by Jo Baring and Beth Greenacre to exhibit in Fair Art Fair Curated II - Womxn at Unit 1 Gallery|Workshop, London. Last year she exhibited in Huddersfield as part of #aspshows, A Generous Space 3.
